Handle a failed or interrupted response

Open in Agentum

Purpose

Neda's report stops halfway because her connection dropped, and she is not sure whether to send the request again. Find out what happened to a reply that stopped, failed or never finished, and recover without sending the same request twice.

Before you start

Open the chat that has the problem, in the same workspace. If you reloaded or closed the page, reopen the chat from "Chats": a reply that was still running keeps running and appears again.

Steps

  1. Look at the chat. A spinning activity indicator next to the chat in the sidebar and "Chats" (its screen-reader label is "Running...") means a reply is still being written. The words "Thinking..." or "Starting the agent..." mean it is working, and a tool name with the status "Running" or "Awaiting approval" means it is using a tool.
  2. To stop a reply that is still running, select "Stop generation" (the square button), or press Esc while the message box has focus and the shortcut is enabled. The chat then shows "Run canceled", and everything written so far stays.
  3. If the reply failed, a red card titled "The agent connection failed" shows the reason. Select "Try again" on the card. The failed attempt is removed and a new answer starts, using the model and thinking level now selected in the message box. Your own messages and earlier answers stay.
  4. If the card says the connection failed but the reply seems to be still running, wait a moment and reload the chat before retrying. A lost connection in your browser does not always stop the work on the server.
  5. If a tool is waiting for you (only when "Tool approval" in Settings, "Plugins", is not "Always allow", the default), a card in the message says "This tool needs your approval before it can continue." with "Approve" and "Reject". The reply is paused, not broken. See Follow what the agent is doing.
  6. If you stopped a reply by mistake, send the same message again or select "Try again" on the earlier answer.

Expected result

You can see whether the work is still running, finished, failed or canceled, and you can choose to wait, stop, retry or answer the approval. A retry starts one new request, and it uses your allowance again.

Troubleshooting

Problem What to do
"The agent could not start. Please try again." Select "Try again". If it repeats, check your plan and usage allowance.
"The assistant could not finish its response. Please try again." Select "Try again", or shorten the request or choose a different model.
"The run was interrupted. Please try again." Select "Try again".
"This run has already finished." The reply ended just before you stopped it. Reload the chat to see the final answer.
"Only a finished run can be retried." Stop the running reply first, then select "Try again".
"The original request is no longer available, so it cannot be retried." Send the message again.
"You have reached your usage limit. Try again after it resets." or "You have reached your usage limit. It resets at [time]." Wait for your allowance to reset or ask the workspace owner. See Understand plans and usage limits.
"This model is not available. Choose another model." Pick another model before selecting "Try again".
Approving feels risky Select "Reject". Never approve an action just to make an error go away.
