Start a chat
Open in AgentumPurpose
Mina wants to plan a week of dinners for a family of five and has no idea how to begin. Open a new chat, type or paste your question, and stop the reply if you change your mind.
Before you start
Sign in and pick the workspace you want to work in. Your plan and usage allowance apply to every message.
Steps
- Open a new chat in any of these ways: select "New chat" in the sidebar, use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+O, or Cmd+Shift+O on a Mac, when shortcuts are on in Settings, "Keyboard"), use the message box at the top of "Chats", or open an agent and select "Start chat". Inside a project, the box "New chat in [project]" starts a chat that belongs to it.
- The new-chat page for the default agent shows a greeting that changes with the time of day, the weekday and the season, usually with your name. If you turned them on, it also shows conversation starters. If Agentum does not know your name yet, a card asks "What should Agentum call you?": type a name and select "Save", or select "Not now". Selecting a starter sends it at once. The "Chat" and "Work" switch at the top is explained in Use Work mode.
- Type in the box "Message your agent...". Press Enter to send and Shift+Enter for a new line. Select "Add to message" to attach files (see Attach files to a chat). The model and thinking level are shown at the end of the box (see Choose a chat model and thinking level).
- Select "Send message" (the up arrow). The arrow is replaced by the "Live voice chat" button while the box is empty, and by a square "Stop generation" button while a reply is being written. The chat is saved and its page opens.
- Watch the reply appear. If the agent asks to use a tool, it runs without asking unless you changed Settings, "Plugins", "Tool approval" from "Always allow" (see Follow what the agent is doing). To stop a reply, select "Stop generation", or press Esc while the message box has focus and the shortcut is enabled.
- To write the next message quickly, press Shift+Esc to put the cursor back in the message box. Your draft is kept for each chat while you move around, and if sending fails your text comes back into the box.
Expected result
Sending saves a conversation that you can find again in the sidebar under "Recents" and in "Chats". A small spinner next to it means a reply is still being written, and a dot means there is a message you have not read.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Send message" is dimmed | Type something or attach a file. If a file is still uploading, wait until its spinner stops. Remove any attachment showing a red warning, then upload it again or send without it. |
| "You have reached your usage limit. Try again after it resets." or "You have reached your usage limit. It resets at [time]." | You used your allowance for now. See Understand plans and usage limits. |
| "The agent could not start. Please try again." or "The assistant could not finish its response. Please try again." | Select "Try again" on the reply, or send the message again. |
| "This draft was already sent. Open a new conversation." | Open a new chat from the sidebar and send again. |
| "Your current plan does not include this feature." or "Your workspace policy does not allow this kind of request." | Ask a workspace owner or administrator, or check your plan. |
| The page was closed while a reply was running | Reopen the chat from "Chats". The reply keeps running and shows when you return. |
