Configure agent memory
Open in AgentumPurpose
Neda should not have to explain a regular customer's order again every time she opens a new chat with the assistant. Choose how an agent keeps the current conversation, what it remembers about a user across conversations, and how it shortens long history.
Before you start
The custom agent must belong to your current workspace, and you need permission to manage agents. Memory belongs to the agent: each person who talks to it has separate memory.
Steps
- Open "Agents", find your agent under "My agents" and select it. In the window, open "Agent actions" (the three dots) and choose "Edit agent".
- Open "Memory". The switch at the top, "Enable memory", turns the whole section on or off. While it is off, the settings below cannot be edited.
- Under "Scope", set "Memory scope" to "Current conversation" (memory stays inside one conversation) or "User and agent" (the agent can recall facts for the same user across conversations). Choosing "Current conversation" turns durable memory off, and turning on "Durable user memory" switches the scope to "User and agent".
- Under "Short-term memory", "Conversation checkpoints" lets the agent continue the current conversation with its earlier messages and tool state.
- Under "Long-term memory", turn on "Durable user memory" to keep useful facts for later conversations. Set "Retention period" (days) and write "Extraction instructions". Durable memory retains message text for later recall. Extraction instructions guide how recalled information is used; they do not prevent storage. Turn durable memory off if you do not want messages retained this way.
- Under "Retrieval", turn on "Retrieve relevant memories" so the agent recalls matching facts before it answers, and set "Results per request".
- Under "Summarization behavior", turn on "Summarize old history" to compress old messages when the conversation gets long. Set "Trigger token count" and "Recent messages to keep".
- Select "Save".
Expected result
| Control | Range | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Retention period | 1 to 3,650 days | 90 |
| Extraction instructions | Up to 2,000 characters | A short default guidance text |
| Results per request | 1 to 20 | 6 |
| Trigger token count | 1,000 to 200,000 | 12,000 |
| Recent messages to keep | 1 to 100 | 20 |
New agents start with memory on, "Current conversation" scope, checkpoints on, durable memory off, retrieval on and summarization on. Expired memories are removed automatically. Turning memory off does not delete past chats.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Controls are greyed out | Turn on "Enable memory" first. |
| The agent does not recall facts from earlier chats | Use scope "User and agent" and turn on both "Durable user memory" and "Retrieve relevant memories". Facts older than the retention period are gone. |
| Sensitive details were remembered | Extraction instructions are guidance, not a filter, and durable memory retains message text (truncated to 4,000 characters) for later recall. Turn durable memory off if you do not want messages retained, and do not share secrets in chat. |
| "Save" fails | Read the error under the header and save again. |
