Edit an agent
Open in AgentumPurpose
A few weeks in, Kian notices that the support assistant is wordier than a chat needs. Open the agent's editor to change its identity, instructions, model and every other setting, and check the result in the live preview before you save.
Before you start
You can edit custom agents belonging to your current workspace if you have permission to manage agents.
Steps
- Open "Agents", find the agent under "My agents" and select it. In the window, open "Agent actions" (the three dots) and choose "Edit agent". The editor lists 15 sections under "Configure agent". Select one to open it, and use "Agent settings" at the top of a section to return to the list.
- "Identity" and "Instructions": change the name, description, image, creator website, starters, capabilities, category, publishing and "Agent instructions". See "Create a custom agent" for the limits.
- "Model": choose the "Primary model". "Reasoning effort" appears only for models that support it (the choices are "Model default" and the levels the model offers); choosing a model that does not support the current effort clears it. Set "Maximum output tokens" (64 to 32,768) and "Temperature" (0 to 2, in steps of 0.1). Retries, fallback models and the model call limit are also here, described in "Set agent execution limits".
- "Voice" and "Vision": see "Choose voice and vision models for an agent".
- "Memory", "Knowledge", "Structured output", "Guardrails", "Sub-agents", "Plugins", "Skills", "Channels", "Execution" and "Behavior" each have their own article.
- Check the result in the live preview on the right, then select "Save". Your changes stay in the editor until you save. Leaving without saving discards them.
Expected result
The agent is updated and a chat with it opens. Later chats use the new settings. Existing chats are not rewritten.
| Setting | Range |
|---|---|
| Maximum output tokens | 64 to 32,768 |
| Temperature | 0 to 2 |
The model's own limits still apply, so a high output setting does not guarantee a long answer.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Edit agent" is missing | "Edit agent" appears for custom agents owned by your workspace. Saving changes requires permission to manage agents. |
| "Save" is disabled | The name is empty, the primary model is no longer available, or the structured output schema is invalid. |
| An error appears after "Save" | Read it, fix the setting it names and save again. Nothing is saved until the error is gone. |
