Attach files to a chat

Open in Agentum

Purpose

Neda has last week's orders in a spreadsheet and does not want to retype a single row. Attach it, or a photo, a document or a voice recording, to your message and the agent works from the file itself.

Before you start

Open the chat you want, or start a new one. Your plan must include file uploads, and your workspace needs free storage (see Settings, "Storage"). To have the agent look at a picture, choose a model that shows the "Vision" badge in the model list.

Steps

  1. Select the plus button "Add to message" at the start of the message box, then "Add photos, files & audio" ("Upload from computer"). You can also drag files from your computer onto the page. The same menu has "Add knowledge", which lets you pick a knowledge base to ask about.
  2. Choose up to 20 files. Each file can be up to 25 MB. Audio recordings can be up to 300 MB and 2 hours long; a longer recording is refused with "Recordings can be up to 2 hours." Automatic document reading supports files up to 5 MB and reads up to 50,000 characters, so a successful upload does not mean the whole document is read. Split larger documents into smaller files. Each file appears as a small tile above the message box with a spinner while it uploads.
  3. To remove a file you do not want, or one that failed (it shows a red warning icon), select the small x on its tile ("Remove [file name]").
  4. Write your message (the text is optional when files are attached) and select "Send message". Sending waits until every upload has finished.
  5. After sending, the chat shows the progress of getting your files ready, under "File and audio activity": "Preparing files", "Preparing image for the model", "Reading document", "Transcribing audio", and finally "Files ready".
  6. Select an attached image or file in the chat to open its preview. Use "Previous file" and "Next file" to move between the chat's files, and "Close file preview" to leave. Audio and voice files show a player: use "Play voice message" and "Pause voice message" to play or pause, and select a position on the waveform ("Seek voice message") to jump to it. "Show transcription" reveals the text, and "Hide transcription" hides it again. To see all the files of a chat, open its options menu (three dots) and select "View files in chat".

Expected result

The files are saved with the message and count toward your workspace storage. The agent can read supported documents, look at images when the chosen model supports images, and use the text of audio files. A recording is transcribed with speaker labels. When it finds two or more speakers, the agent first asks whether you want to tell it who they are, and you can skip that. While a recording is attached and the message box is empty, a "Summarize this voice" button appears above the box. Uploaded files also appear in the chat's "Inputs" list in Work mode (see Use Work mode).

Troubleshooting

Problem What to do
"You can upload up to 20 files." Remove some files and send the rest in a second message.
"Each file must be 25 MB or smaller, and audio recordings 300 MB or smaller." or "This file is larger than your plan allows." Choose a smaller file, or compress it.
"This file type is not supported." Convert the file to a common format, such as PDF, a Word file, an image, plain text, Markdown, CSV or JSON. For spreadsheets, export the relevant sheet as CSV. For scanned PDFs, provide a searchable PDF or clear page images with a model that supports images.
"This workspace has used all of its storage." Library lets you inspect files but cannot delete them. Remove unneeded project sources from the project's "Sources" tab, manage sites through "Sites", or ask the workspace owner about storage capacity.
"Your current plan does not include this feature." File uploads are not part of your plan. See Understand plans and usage limits.
"The file could not be uploaded. Please try again." or "The file did not upload completely. Please try again." Remove the file and add it again.
"The selected model cannot read images. Add a text prompt or choose a model that supports images." Choose a model with the "Vision" badge, or describe the image in words.
"File or audio processing failed" appears in the chat Send the file again, or try a different format. A thumbnail alone does not mean the file was read.
"Preview is not available for this file type.", "Could not load this file." or "Unable to play audio. Try again." Download the file from the chat's files and open it on your computer, or attach it again.
