Follow what the agent is doing
Open in AgentumPurpose
Neda is about to send Sara a figure the agent calculated, and she wants to know where it came from. Open the activity to see how the agent reached its answer and which tools it used, and approve or reject a tool before it runs when you have asked to be asked.
Before you start
Open a chat in which the agent is working or has finished. Tools such as web search, plugins and file actions only appear when the agent uses them. Whether a tool asks for your approval depends on Settings, "Plugins", "Tool approval" (see Plugins in Settings). The default, "Always allow", never asks in a web chat. With "Always ask", the agent asks before every plugin tool that uses a connected account. With "Allow read actions" or "Allow low-risk actions", it asks only for actions that do more than read.
Steps
- While the agent works, the chat shows "Thinking..." and, when the model reasons out loud, a "Reasoning" block you can open to read. A line such as "Used 3 tools" or "2 sources" can be opened to list them. Tool lines use plain names, such as "Web search", "Search knowledge" and the readable name of a plugin's tool.
- Select "View tool details" on a tool line to open the "Activity" panel. It lists, in order, every thinking step, tool call, and file or audio step of the chat. Select an entry to see its "Parameters", then its "Result" or "Error". The status of each tool is one of "Pending", "Running", "Awaiting approval", "Responded", "Completed", "Error" or "Denied".
- You can also open the panel from the options menu (three dots) at the top of the chat by selecting "Activity". Select "Close activity panel" to hide it.
- When a tool needs your permission (only if "Tool approval" is not "Always allow"), the reply pauses and a card in the message, and the "Activity" panel, say "This tool needs your approval before it can continue." Check the tool and its parameters, then select "Approve" or "Reject". Afterwards the box says "Tool execution approved." or "Tool execution rejected." and the agent carries on without that tool if you rejected it.
- In Work mode, the lines read like "Reading [file]", "Writing [file]", "Editing [file]", "Searching [place]" and "Waiting for approval to write [file]". See Use Work mode.
- Files and voice you attach show their own steps under "File and audio activity", for example "Preparing files" and "Transcribing audio".
Expected result
You can see what the agent did and why before you rely on the answer. A tool that you rejected does not run.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| The reply is stuck on "Awaiting approval" | The agent is waiting for you. Open the tool and select "Approve" or "Reject". This is not a connection problem. |
| You do not want to be asked each time | Change "Tool approval" in Settings, "Plugins". Choose "Always allow" (the default) or another looser option only for tools you trust. |
| "Error" appears on a tool | Select it to read the message. The agent usually tries another way. If not, rephrase your request. |
| "Denied" appears on a tool | The action was rejected, so it did not run. Ask again if you want it done. |
| "Your plan or workspace policy does not allow this plugin." | Ask an administrator to check the workspace's plugin policy. See Restrict workspace models, plugins and Work. |
| You do not recognize what a tool wants to do | Select "Reject". Never approve an action only to make the message go away. |
